Improving Print Quality on the Pyramid PTR4000 Time Clock

The Pyramid PTR4000 has earned a reputation for longevity in workplaces where reliability matters. Many units remain in service decades after installation, especially in manufacturing, service shops, and small offices that rely on simple punch card tracking. If your PTR4000 is still operating but producing light or difficult-to-read print impressions, a minor mechanical adjustment may improve print quality before replacement becomes necessary.

At EmployeeTimeClocks.com, we frequently hear from customers maintaining older mechanical and auto-totaling clocks that continue to function reliably but begin to show lighter printing as internal components wear. In many cases, replacing the ribbon solves the issue. However, when a new ribbon does not restore print clarity, adjusting the print head pressure may help extend the usable life of the recorder.

Description

Older PTR4000 models may experience reduced print darkness over time due to normal mechanical wear. This can result in time cards that are difficult to read or verify during payroll processing. The adjustment described below slightly increases print head pressure, improving contact between the ribbon and time card.

This adjustment should be performed carefully and only as described. Incorrect adjustments can affect clock operation.

Adjustment Procedure

  • Remove the top cover of the time recorder using the unit key.
  • Tip the recorder slightly backward so the front lifts approximately 3½ inches from the table.
  • Look inside the unit below the display area, toward the rear of the mechanism.
  • Locate the set screw positioned between the motor (left side) and the cam cylinder (right side). The correct screw typically has a red locking compound mark.
  • Important: Do not adjust the set screw that secures the cam to the cam shaft. Adjusting the wrong screw may affect clock timing and operation.
  • Insert a 5/64" Allen wrench into the correct set screw and turn it ½ turn counter-clockwise.
  • Test print using a blank time card.
  • If improvement is noted but additional darkness is needed, repeat in ½ turn increments.
