Installing TimeVue on a Network (2008 Setup Guide)
This article documents the traditional process used to install Icon Time Systems TimeVue software on a network using a shared database configuration. TimeVue was widely used with early computerized time clock systems, and many installations remain in service today. The instructions below reflect the typical setup process used during the 2008 timeframe when TimeVue relied on a locally installed application connected to a shared database file.
Because TimeVue is legacy software, installation procedures may differ slightly depending on Windows version and network permissions. The goal of the network setup is to move the primary database file from a single workstation to a shared server location so multiple users can access the same employee time and attendance data.
Overview of the TimeVue Network Installation Process
In a standard installation, TimeVue initially creates a database file named Datastorage.tvd on the local workstation. For multi-user environments, this file must be moved to a shared folder on the server. Each workstation installation is then directed to use the shared database instead of a local copy.
Step-by-Step Installation Summary
- Install TimeVue on the first workstation and launch the software.
- When the “Installation Incomplete” window appears, click OK to locate the database file.
- In the browse window, select the default Datastorage.tvd file and click Open.
- Enter the registration code in the “Enable Options” window.
- Select Start from the welcome screen. Install any additional option modules if required.
- Exit TimeVue.
- Create a shared folder on the server where the database will reside. If the server is not visible, map a network drive first.
- Locate the Datastorage.tvd file on the workstation, typically found at:
C:\Program Files\Icon Time Systems\TimeVue
- Copy the Datastorage.tvd file to the shared server folder.
- Rename the workstation copy to Datastorageold.tvd.
- Restart TimeVue and browse to the Datastorage.tvd file located on the server.
Adding Additional Workstations
For multi-user licenses, install TimeVue on each additional workstation and repeat the following steps:
- Locate the local Datastorage.tvd file and rename it to Datastorageold.tvd.
- Start TimeVue and click OK when prompted to locate the database.
- Browse to the shared Datastorage.tvd file on the server and open it.
- Enter the original registration code and install any additional modules if required.
- Repeat for each workstation using the shared data
