The Lathem 7500E supports both punch rounding and totals rounding. These settings are common across many timekeeping systems, but it is important to understand how rounding logic works before configuring the clock. Rounding affects hour calculations only. The actual punch time is always printed on the employee’s time card.
Choosing the Proper Rounding Interval
First determine your rounding unit:
- Tenth of an hour: 6-minute interval
- Quarter hour: 15-minute interval
Each interval includes a defined “breakpoint.” The breakpoint determines when a punch rounds forward or backward.
Understanding Breakpoints
IN Punches:
The breakpoint is counted from the beginning of the interval. Punches round forward to the end of the interval on or after the breakpoint.
OUT Punches:
The breakpoint is counted from the end of the interval. Punches round backward to the beginning of the interval on or before the breakpoint.
Available Rounding Units in the 7500E
- 1: None (exact minute)
- 2: 6 minutes with a 3-minute breakpoint (tenth of an hour)
- 3: 15 minutes with a 3-minute breakpoint (quarter hour)
- 4: 15 minutes with a 7-minute breakpoint (quarter hour)
Recommended Setting
We typically recommend 15-minute rounding with a 7-minute breakpoint (Rule “2, 4” in the rounding settings). This creates a balanced rounding window consistent with common payroll practices.
Example: 15-Minute Rounding with 7-Minute Breakpoint
IN Punch Example:
9:15 – 9:22 rounds back to 9:15
9:23 – 9:30 rounds forward to 9:30
OUT Punch Example:
5:00 – 5:07 rounds back to 5:00
5:08 – 5:15 rounds forward to 5:15
Always confirm that your rounding policy complies with federal and state wage regulations before applying changes. Properly configured rounding helps standardize payroll calculations while maintaining accurate printed records.
