How to upgrade a Icon RS232 clock to a network terminal
This procedure explains how to field-upgrade an ICON RS232 time clock terminal to a TCP/IP network terminal using a Tibbo network interface card. Follow each step carefully to avoid damaging internal components.
Important: Disconnect power before opening the clock. Work on a clean surface to prevent damage to the display or housing.
Hardware Upgrade Procedure
- Unplug the time clock and place it face down on a cloth or clean sheet of paper.
- Remove the four Phillips screws from the back of the unit and set the back cover aside.
- Remove the four smaller Phillips screws securing the main circuit board.
- Gently tip the circuit board up and to the left. Do not disconnect any cables.
Caution: Be careful not to damage any thin wires. Proximity models will have antenna wires attached.
- Locate the small removable IC chip on the circuit board.
- Using a small flat-blade screwdriver, carefully pry the IC chip out of its mounting block.
- Fold the circuit board back into place and secure it using the four screws removed earlier.
Tibbo Network Card Installation
- Mount the Tibbo TCP/IP network card on top of the display board.
- Use the two available mounting holes, long screws, and white nylon spacers. The spacers must be installed.
- Connect the flat ribbon cable from the Tibbo board to the exposed pin header on the main circuit board.
Power-Up and Diagnostic Check
- Plug the time clock back in and allow it to fully reboot.
- Press the LOCK button.
- Enter the default access code: 00 00 00 00.
- Use the arrow keys to navigate to Show Options.
- Press Enter and wait while the system cycles through the diagnostics.
If the display indicates TCP/IP, the upgrade is complete.
If the display indicates RS232, power the unit off and reverse the flat cable connection on the Tibbo board. Reapply power and repeat the diagnostic check.
Final Assembly
- Once TCP/IP is confirmed, reinstall the back cover.
- Follow standard instructions to configure the terminal on your TCP/IP network.
